Compound Exercises: 3 Major Reasons To Do Them

Gone are the days where we have time to focus on and isolate each and every muscle group at the gym. Time is precious these days and furthermore, there is limited space and equipment at the gym with the new years resolution crowd! That is exactly why compound movements should be your best friend. They will get you the results you want without spending tons of time at the gym.  Simply put, exercises can be broken down into two basic categories: compound and isolation exercises. Compound exercises work more than one muscle group at a time (most of the time almost all muscle groups!) and they are always multi-joint exercises. Isolation exercises use one muscle group at a time and are only single joint exercises. Here's an example to make it clearer to visualize: A barbell squat includes movement of your hip & knee joint and fires up your quads, glutes, back, core and hamstrings. This is a compound movement. A seated leg extension includes the movement only at your knee joint and only targets one muscle group: your quadriceps. See the difference?  Now of course there's always a time and place for isolation exercises, but if you're short on time or can only get to the gym 2-3 days per week, read on to see how compound exercises can be a game changer.

3 Major Reasons Why You Should Do Compound Exercises

  1. Functionality

Compound exercises are functional. In our daily routines, it is very rare that we are only utilizing one muscle group at a time. Pretty much every movement in every day activities, like walking, running, carrying groceries, sitting, playing sports, etc. involve moving multiple joints at a time. Compound exercises such as squats, deadlifts, rows, pull-ups, etc. mimic these everyday movements and can make us stronger for life.

2. Bigger Bang For Your Buck

As compound movements utilize more muscle groups at once, your working harder, burning more calories and building strength all over your body in less amounts of time. Compound exercises also allow you to lift a bit heavier weight because you're engaging your entire body. Front squats and deadlifts, for example, are one of the best exercises that can be done (especially for you ladies!) because they require essentially every muscle in your body to work hard! And I'll tell you this - my core is sore every time after I do front squats because our cores work so hard to stabilize in a front loaded movement, and NEVER after I do crunches. Forget the endless crunches and work various muscle groups at once!

3. Increase Lean Muscle Tissue All Over

Contrary to popular belief, heavier compound movements are really the tools you need to "tone" and "tighten" your entire body. Lifting heavy weights with proper and safe form will most definitely not make you bulky or spike your testosterone levels! It will do just the opposite: burn fat, boost your metabolism, define your muscles and make you one strong, badass lady.

#WorkoutWednesday: Crazy 7 Workout

HUMP DAYYY!  Oh my gosh, you guys, we're half way there. I can't wait. Once it's the weekend I'm only 1 and a half work days away from going home to Florida! I think what I love the most about these #workoutwednesday posts is the fact that I get to hype myself up for the weekend...I truly never realized how amazing the weekends were until I graduated college!

Also this weekend, I'm meeting up with two awesome Philly bloggers - Cristin & Brittany! We're meeting up in Manayunk for dinner & drinks - can't wait to meet them (in real life)! It's so strange how the interwebz can bring together like minded people so easily. We met through through Instagram...what is life?

#WorkoutWednesday

Okay and now getting onto the fun part for today...this CRAZY 7 workout! Why 7, you ask? No clue. Honestly when I was programming this workout, I knew I wanted to include burpees, and for some reason  7 burpees sounded a lot nicer than 10 burpees. And then I got fixated on the number 7 so I created the workout of 7 exercises, 7 reps, 7 rounds. 7-7-7.

This workout has an equal balance of some push, pull, strength and cardiovascular movements - just the way I like it. See the video below for the demos of each exercise! P.S. anything can be modified i.e. step outs for the burpees, take the jump out of the squat, sit up instead of V-up, jumping jack instead of high knees, TRX rows instead of single arm archer rows...there are ALWAYS options! So don't ever do away with a workout if the exercises look intimidating - just ask for the options!

And finally, I'll share a current playlist that's rocking my world. Do Or Die by Childish Gambino and Flux Pavillion is my new jam plus anything by Saint Motel!

Have a great day, everyone!

How To Bounce Back After A Week of Indulging

How To Bounce Back After A Week of Indulging! A few simple tips to get you back on track. We've all been there, done that. Eating and drinking just a little too much - maybe just during the weekend or the span of an entire week, month, what have you. It happens! Rather than beating ourselves up for it, we can take a more proactive approach. Let me tell you, last week I ate and drank all kinds of crazy good food and wine. Although I still managed to get in some exercise, eating a lot of heavy foods and sugar really does take a little toll on my body.

So, instead of skipping meals, doing a 'master cleanse' (ugh, cringe) or getting all upset about it, here are a few simple tips that can help to get you back on track!

Drink Water

Drink water and drink a ton of it! Even though it makes you feel full, drinking a ton of water is the best thing you can do after overeating or indulging. It will help clear out your system and keep you hydrated. After I eat a big, unhealthy meal, I always feel SO thirsty! Eating out a lot can add a lot of unwanted sodium into your system, and the only way to counteract that is with some H2O. Get crazy and add some lemon to it. Keep a full bottle near you all day. I found this awesome Zinger water bottle that lets you squeeze and infuse citrus juice into the bottle - perfect for all those water haters.

Move Ya Body

Although you might feel a bit slow, moving your body is important. Chances are you're feeling a little sluggish from the lack of nutrients or excess refined sugar & carbohydrates that you've consumed. One of the best ways to get those energy levels back is to sweat it out. You don't have to go crazy, even a light workout will do, like this one! Two things that help me are getting outside and wearing long sleeves or pants. Fresh air does wonders. You can also wear long sleeves or pants during a workout if you really want to sweat and keep your body temperature warm.

Don't Skip Meals

Don't be tempted. The only way to keep your metabolism going is if you fuel your body! Stick with a lot of protein, fiber and fresh produce to keep you feeling full. Think of it as adding all the good fuel back in to replace the not-so-good fuel.

Don't Stress

Seriously, don't get your panties all in a wad. So you ate some delicious meals and drank a little too much wine? Great, you're enjoying life.
